PROACTIVE VS REACTIVE
Are you prepared for the ‘new normal’? Where do you want to be in your future? What does that look like? Has everything as you’ve known it changed? Are your previous certainties uncertain? Has the comfort zone dissipated with the new normal? When you celebrated New Year 2020 how did you see your year ahead? What of that has realized, did you anticipate what mid 2020 would look like?
We can look at the first half of this year like a deer in the road mesmerized by the headlights of a car. Focused on the very thing that could destroy us and not get out of the way. Focusing on the reality of the COVID19 virus, how it has changed our lives. Combined with the negativity we hear from those around us. Binge watching the news and absorbing negativity. Or you can see the current situation as a way for you to find your way around this obstacle in the road to a greener and better future. It is said that life is what happens when you are making other plans. Here is a reality check. The person with the most flexibility wins. If you remain stuck with the realities, stuck with your previous expectations of making a living, you will become a dinosaur. If you focus on what was, what you are missing from before February this year, be it movement, things or activities, you will only feel desperation, stress, depression and resignation to loss. If you are focused on what can be, you have hope. Which is the better state of mind?
HISTORY OF MAJOR CRISIS
There have been many many pandemics in history. The first documented was in 430 BC in Athens which is believed to have been typhoid. The Cholera pandemic of 1817 killed a million Russians alone and even more by moving across Europe (and populations were not then what they are today). 1665 the great plague of London 20% of it’s population in 5 months. The Spanish flu of 1918 resulted in 50 million deaths. The list goes on of health pandemics. Let’s not just look at pandemics. War has caused unbelievable crisis and loss of life, destruction of infrastructure. It is said that modern day flight, rocket science, nuclear energy, technology and even motor cars owe their speedy advances to the second world war. Yet at the time the modern world was all but in ruins, nothing was the same and nothing ever would be for the survivors. People didn’t have food or jobs. Yet from that time of chaos and devastation, some people rose from the bomb shelled countries to become business leaders, innovators, and successful on so many levels. Others only saw doom and gloom and crawled into a metaphorical hole and hibernated.
THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY
I would like to take you on a journey away from the headlights. Away from focusing on all the things that this new world order has thrown at you. The uncertainty, allowing circumstances to dictate where you will be, how your future looks. People in gainful employment or in a career that has a dubious future are caught between a rock and a hard place. Those of us with businesses that may not be relevant post lock down could also fall into this category. Knowing that there is a problem is different to finding a solution. You have everything you need to gear yourself now to other possibilities, if you look for them and work towards them. Most of us have a dream of what we would really like to be doing. Following a passion. Whether it is in your current line of work where you have a different spin on the product offering you have or if it is a hobby or a project that you see can make you money. What have you done with this dream thus far? Has it been on the back burner with a tag saying ‘I would like to one day’? Or perhaps it has been a situation where you have limiting beliefs in yourself and your capability. Often it can be that right now ‘I need to pay the bills’! My current Job gives me a guaranteed income, security and keeps me in my comfort zone (Whatever that looks like).
WAKE UP TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER
There is no longer a guaranteed income for most, security and ‘comfort zone are dubious’. So many people are getting salary cuts or even getting ‘let go’ by their employers. Some businesses see there current service or product offering become less in demand, or even in some instances redundant. If you haven’t yet, perhaps it is time to plan something new, prepare yourself for the possible life altering changes of what is to come. Change is not easy for anyone but this is a time when you don’t have the luxury of avoiding it. As you are more aware than ever… change is inevitable. Comfort zone is shaken to it’s core. It is not time to blame and long for the past.
I’M NOT TALKING IN THEORY HERE
I am all too familiar with the cycle of change and starting again. I am not a young man and at the age of 54 I changed my vocation and started a whole new vocation, and this was before the necessity brought on by the dreaded virus. Now I am perusing my true life’s purpose aligned with my values and I am on the path to a happier and more successful life. In the first months of 2019 I did a full 180 degrees turn. Coming from a financial services background of two decades and then starting on the path to becoming a life and executive coach. Something that has been in my DNA for most of my life, but never formally pursued. Through learning and applying what I have learnt, combined with my life experience of changing and adapting, I have come up with a formula that has worked for me and is working for those I am helping.
